the Founding of the Indische Partij

Indische Partij was short-lived but influential political organisation founded in 1912 by the Indo-European journalist Douwes Dekker and the Javanese Physician Tjipto Mangoenkoesoemo and Soewardi Soerjaningrat. As one the first political organisations pioneering Indonesian nationalism in the colonial Dutch East Indies it inspired Several later Organisations Such as the National Indische Partij (N.I.P) or Sarekat Hindia in 1919 and Indo Europeesch Verbond in 1919 its direct successor was insulinde.

Criticism of colonial life has existed since the beginning of the 20th century. As was done by Tjipto Mangunkusumo who criticized it through his writings published in the De Locomotief newspaper. According to him, Javanese society finds it difficult to progress because it is confined by feudalism and society as a whole experiences excessive exploitation. This caused a lot of poverty and backwardness so he thought colonialism had to end. According to him, the way to end colonialism is through political struggle. This is what caused Tjipto Mangunkusumo to leave Budi Utomo, who did not share his views. Then he met Dekker and Suwardi Suryaningrat who were of the same mind and formed the Indische Partij
